How to Build a Pool Table Cover

How to Build a Pool Table Cover

A pool table sits center stage in most rooms, but if the table is used only when friends are visiting or on the weekends, the table may sit open and unused during the week. The felt on the table is often a dark color, and leaving the table open will allow dust and dirt to collect on the felt. This means you have to clean the felt before you play, and that is a hassle. To fix this, it is easy to make a simple, vinyl pool table cover that slips over the table easily and removes quickly for a fast game of pool.

Instructions

    1

Measure the width of the pool table and add 1 inch. Measure the length and add 1 inch. Measure the height of the tabletop to just under the pockets and add 3 inches.

    2

Seam the vinyl fabric together if your top size is larger than the dimensions of your fabric. Place the seam in the center, and top-sew along each side of the seam to improve the seam strength. Cut your fabric for the top. Cut two pieces of the length and the height. Cut two pieces of the width and the height.

    3

Seam your four side pieces together with 1/2-inch seams. Alternate width, length, width, length. Place your top fabric face side up. Position your sides face sides down and match at each corner with your side fabric to the inside. Pin with 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    4

Sew the sides to the top using a double seam or surge stitch. Fold up the bottom edge 1 inch. Sew a 1-inch hem. Start your hem by sewing back and forth. Stop your hem 9 inches from each corner by sewing back and forth. Start your corner hem 1 inch from where you stopped, sew back and forth. Stop your corner hem 8 inches from the corner by sewing back and forth. Start your side hem at 9 inches by sewing back and forth. Repeat along the bottom hem all around the cover.

    5

Insert heavy elastic into your 1-inch hem opening. Thread the elastic around the corner and out the other 1-inch opening. Gather your fabric by stretching the elastic. Sew the elastic where it emerges through the fabric openings. Sew back and forth. Trim off the elastic and repeat at all corners.
