DIY Square Dining Table

Many frugal people in the 1960s and '70s used commercial wire spools as dining room tables. This hippie icon stood the test of time, being both free and sturdy, but the style is distinctively low budget. For a more refined look in your dining room you can expand on the old, found creation and make a square dining room table that looks a bit more adult. At heart it's still a cultural standby, but on the surface it says you're ready to be more serious about your interior decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Instruct the building supply company to cut your plywood sheet in half, leaving you two pieces of plywood that measure 4 by 4 feet and are 1/2 inch thick.

    2

Measure across the top of the spool to get the spool width. Measure across the plywood square to find that width. Draw a cross on the plywood with one line going down the center of the board and one line going across the center. Subtract the spool width from the plywood width to find the overhang. Divide the overhang by 2. Measure down each of the lines from all four edges to the distance you figured and make a mark. When you lay the spool on the plywood to center it, all four dots should be right at the edge of the spool. Center the spool on top of the square.

    3

Turn the spool right side up, keeping the plywood exactly in place. Screw the plywood square onto the wooden spool circle. Space the screws halfway between the center of the square and the edge, and place them at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 o'clock. Tighten the screws until the flat heads are sunk into the wood.

    4

Spread a generous amount of wood glue onto the surface of the plywood square. Center the other square on top of the first with the rough side down. Match up all four edges exactly.

    5

Place cinder blocks or other heavy objects on top of the plywood to hold it down while the glue is drying. Allow the glue to dry for 8 hours to achieve a secure hold. Cover the table with a square tablecloth to finish.

How to Train in Social Etiquette

How to Train in Social Etiquette

Social etiquette is a broad subject that can concern anything from business protocol to table manners to networking skills. Social etiquette classes and lessons are designed to train professionals and individuals in the arts of manners, confidence, branding, communication and general social awareness. There are plenty of options to choose from when training in social etiquette: you can enroll in a course, attend an evening class or train yourself online.

Instructions

    1

Enroll in a social etiquette course. Look for courses that suit your budget, time and requirements -- choose a two-day workshop if you are short on money and time or enroll in a multi-week program if you need more advanced and detailed training. Courses can offer a variety of teaching styles as well; some classes may be one on one, while others may be in large groups. Inquire with the course provider about class sizes, prices and course duration -- they should be more than happy to answer your questions.

    2

Train in social and social-business etiquette by studying an official degree course. The Protocol School of Washington is an example of an officiated educational body that offers the chance to qualify for an accreditation in corporate-social etiquette and international protocol. You will train by studying at placement companies and with expert teachers. These courses range from specific topics like Asian eating etiquette to more general practices like marketing and PR. Other social etiquette and protocol academies include the Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette and the Mississippi School of Social Protocol & Etiquette.

    3

Teach yourself social etiquette by reading articles and tips online. Training yourself is a great idea if you need to know only the basics of certain etiquette rules in certain social situations. Read up, for example, on your table manners and dining etiquette if you are going to a charity ball or formal dinner. Training yourself also saves teaching fees.

How to Make a Round Picnic Table

How to Make a Round Picnic Table

Picnic tables are often used for outdoor gatherings but the long rectangular shape can separate individuals at one end from interacting with friends or family at the opposite end. Create a more sociable outdoor experience by creating a round picnic table. Round picnic tables are also good for small spaces as they allow people to move more easily than trying to get around a rectangular table with sharp corners. Building a round picnic table is a rather simple task that requires only a few extra steps when compared to creating a standard picnic table. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure in 6 inches from each end of one of the 2-inch by 4-inch by 36-inch boards and mark with a pencil. Place the end of one 4-inch by 4-inch by 30-inch board on each of the two marks and attach by driving two 5-inch screws through the 2x4x36 directly into the end of each 4x4x30. You now have two legs attached by a board across the top. Repeat this step with the remaining 2x4x36 and 4x4x30s so you have two pairs of legs.

    2

Lay six 36-inch by 2-inch by 6-inch boards side by side horizontally to create a 36-inch by 36-inch square. Measure 6-inches in from the left side of the square and place one pair of legs vertically, cross-board side down so they're sticking up into the air, on the mark and attach to the boards below by driving two 3-inch screws through each point where the leg cross-board intersects with the 2-by-6s below. Repeat on the right side to attach the remaining pair of legs in the same way.

    3

Tie one end of a 20-inch string around the center of a pencil and the other end to a screw, using a tape measure to achieve an 18-inch length of string from the pencil to the screw.

    4

Set the table on a flat surface, flipping it over so it's upright and resting on its four legs. Drive the screw with string attached two or three turns into the direct center of the table, just enough to secure it in place.

    5

Draw a 36-inch diameter circle on top of the table as guided by the string. Carefully pull the pencil to tighten the string and draw the circle evenly around the table. Remove the screw with the string from the surface of the table.

    6

Cut along the circular outline with a handsaw, going slowly to avoid cutting off the pattern.

    7

Sand the surface and edges of the table with 220-grit sandpaper to create a smooth finish and remove any rough or sharp edges.

    8

Wipe excess sand and dust off the table with a damp towel, being careful to remove any build up in cracks and crevices on the surface of the table. Allow to dry completely.

    9

Apply a thin layer of polyurethane over every exposed surface on the table using a 6-inch sponge brush. Dip the tip of the brush into the can of polyurethane and apply a thin, consistent layer over the table. Allow the polyurethane to set for two to four hours and then repeat for a second coat. This will create a waterproof finish for the table, which is necessary for outdoor use. Allow table to dry for 24-hours before using.

Do You Crab During High or Low Tide?

Do You Crab During High or Low Tide?

Crabbing is the practice of catching crabs in the ocean, usually by means of a net, crab trap or crab pot. It is popular in locations on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the U.S., including Oregon, Northern California and Maryland. While crabbing is not difficult, conducting a research into the ideal places and time to catch crabs is useful. One consideration is the levels of the ocean's tides.

Tide Definition

Tides occur due to the gravitational pull of the moon on the earth's oceans.
Tides occur due to the gravitational pull of the moon on the earth's oceans.

Tides are the movement of water in the oceans -- the rising and falling of the ocean's surface -- that the gravitational effects of the moon on the earth cause. When it is high tide, a higher level of water reaches toward the shore. When it is low tide, water levels are lower. The time just around high or low tide is called slack tide, and generally lasts from one to three hours, depending on location.

Crabs and the Tides

Crabs spend their time crawling along the bottoms of bays, estuaries and oceans, and tend to move along with the tide. For crabbers, this can drastically affect the likelihood of success in a catch, since the feeding behavior and location of crabs change along with the tide. Crabs tend to be most active, and therefore easiest to catch, when a water body has some movement of water but not an extremely strong current.

Slack Tide

Most crabbing enthusiasts agree that the ideal time to crab is during slack tide, the time just around or after a high or low tide. The reason is that during slack tide, crabbers can reach deeper levels of water from a pier or seashore than at low tide. This time provides some current movement to carry the chemical "smells" of bait, but not so much movement that crabs are unable to crawl about the ocean floor easily without being carried away.

Other Considerations

The likelihood of a successful crabbing trip depends on the time of year and geographic location. In the Pacific Northwest and mid-Atlantic coast, crabbing is most common during the mating season in the late summer and early fall. Summer is a popular time for crabbing in Mississippi. In any case, crabbers should ensure they have the proper licenses and knowledge of crabbing guidelines, such as gender or size restrictions on certain species of crabs.

How to Create a Mountain With a Tunnel for a Model Railroad Layout

How to Create a Mountain With a Tunnel for a Model Railroad Layout

Rather than going out and buying a mountain with a tunnel for your model railway, make your own customized mountain. A homemade mountain with a tunnel will save you money and will perfectly fit the theme of your railroad -- such as winter scene, autumn harvest or desert landscape.

Instructions

    1

Determine how big the inside of the tunnel needs to be for your trains to run through it smoothly.

    2

Sketch a plan for the mountain, including measurements from Step 1 and the location on the track where the mountain will go.

    3

Bend chicken wire into the shape of the interior of the tunnel. Cover it with plastic wrap.

    4

Rip newspapers into approximately 1-inch-wide strips.

    5

Soak the paper strips in a watered-down plaster slurry.

    6

Cover the chicken-wire form completely with the plaster-soaked paper strips.

    7

Mold modeling plaster over the form, shaping it into a mountain. Allow it to dry completely.

    8

Paint the mountain to match your railway's theme. Add grass, trees, rocks, pebbles, dirt, fake snow or even small plastic animals.

    9

Paint the interior of the tunnel black or dark brown.

    10

Cover the entire finished product with acrylic finish for protection.

Dining Room Colors That Go With Sage Green

Dining Room Colors That Go With Sage Green

As you put together your dining room containing sage green, look to neutrals and warm colors to go with your design. Bring the color in through the fabrics or furniture of the room. Even the picture frames can bring in the accent colors to give your room more of a designer touch. Does this Spark an idea?

Cream

Although your first inclination may be to combine a sage green with a dove gray, this combination may be a bit too dreary for a dining room. Consider a warm light neutral instead, such as a creamy white, as the tinge of yellow in the cream brings warmth to the gray undertones of the sage. You can paint the walls a creamy white, pick white furniture for the room or accent the room with the color in pillows or window treatments. Either way you use it, these two colors blend well together in any room.

Black

Try a neutral black in a sage green dining room. High-gloss black lacquer furniture, such as a display cabinet or a sideboard, will create a dramatic effect against a painted sage green wall. Not only will the glossy finish contrast the mat paint, but as the stronger color, the black becomes predominant, drawing the eye to the furniture while the sage acts as a backdrop. An ebony stain, applied to a wood kitchen table and chair set, gives a similar but less dramatic contrast.

Brown

A combination of deep brown and sage blend well in a dining room. The rich tones of a chocolate brown bring out the soothing green tones of the sage green. Pair the two on your table in a patterned linen arrangement, such as on a tablecloth, runner, placemat or napkin. Hang a window treatment consisting of print curtains or a stained wood cornice with sage curtain panels. Dining room chairs, stained a deep brown, may contain sage green cushions, or accent a brown wood picture frame with a sage green mat.

Warm Colors

Warm colors, such as orange or yellow, highlight the green tones in the sage and offset the gray tones; giving the color combination a more vibrant and airy feel. A warm bright red pops against a sage green as the two are diametrically opposite each other on the color wheel. You can bring these warm colors into the dining room as a group in a rug design, set under the dining table. Some designs to consider include a floral motif, an old world vine motif or a multicolored stripe or geometric pattern.

What Affects Tides?

What Affects Tides?

The tide is the movement of the Earth's bodies of water. Tides are mostly seen in the ocean, but also occur in smaller bodies of water like bays and large lakes. Tides occur in cycles: high tide occurs when the water is at its highest point and low tide occurs when the water has receded. Scientists and oceanographers can determine when a tide will occur based on factors that impact its movement.

Gravity

Gravity, first described by Sir Isaac Newton in 1687, is the naturally occurring circumstance where objects are attracted to each other in direct proportion to their mass. The masses and gravitational pull of the sun, the moon and the Earth all interact and cause the occurrence of tides on the Earth's surface. Although the sun is the largest celestial body, its large mass is a counterbalance to the proximity of the moon to the Earth.

Moon

The moon is the most powerful force that impacts the occurrence and timing of tides. As the Earth revolves on its tilted axis, the moon revolves around the Earth, taking appropriately 28 days. Because the distance from the Earth to the moon is relatively short, the moon's gravitational pull exerts a strong magnet on objects on the Earth. The fluidity of the ocean means that the water will draw closer to the moon when the Earth is tilted toward the moon and recede when the Earth is tilted away.

Weather Pattern

Weather patterns like wind and rain also affect tides. If the wind is blowing strongly toward the shore, it will help to push the waves higher and increase the level of the tide. Conversely, the winds can push the water back from the shore, making the low tides even lower. Rain occurs during a low pressure system. This atmospheric pressure increases the height of the tide while high pressure systems decrease the level of the tides.

Shoreline Shape

The shape of the shore or coastline also impacts the tide, more specifically the tidal range, which is the difference between the peak of the high tide and the nadir of the low tide. A funnel shaped coast increases the degree of the tide while narrow shaped shorelines or shallow water decreases the magnitude of a tide.

How to Build a Model Railroad Workbench

How to Build a Model Railroad Workbench

Hobbyists who are dedicated to model railroading encounter a host of problems, but one of the most prominent is finding a proper workbench. A workbench that is too low will cause you back pain from bending over too often, and a workbench that is too high will not allow you to reach across the bench. Finally, a workbench also needs a high amount of stability in order to ensure it will not collapse under moderate weight. The best way to solve all of these problems is to build your own custom workbench with a moderate amount of preparation.

Instructions

    1

Measure the height of your waist from ground level with the tape measure. The height just below which you wear your belt is ideal. Cut four sections of 2-by-4 posts to this length from two of the 8-foot sections using the wood saw. These four equal-length posts will be the legs of your workbench.

    2

Cut two 8-foot sections of 2-by-4 directly in half with the wood saw, creating four 4-foot sections of posts. Use the tape measure to find and mark the center. Use the hammer and nails to create two box frames from the 2-by-4s, making each frame with two sides of 8-foot posts, and two sides of 4-foot posts. There is no wrong way to align the posts, but make sure that each frame is assembled the same way, and that you use at least two nails for every connection.

    3

Use the hammer and nails to secure the end of a leg-post (the posts you created in step 1) to each corner of one of the frames. Hold a leg into a corner of the frame, and pound 2 nails from the inside of each side of the post through to the frame. Repeat with each leg. Flip the frame (with the legs now attached) upside down, placing the legs inside the other frame. Secure the bottom of the legs to this other frame in the same way you did before.

    4

Place the 4- by 8-foot plywood board on top of the assembled frames, and align the corners. Secure it in place with the hammer and nails, using one nail in each corner.

How to Refinish a Formal Dining Room

How to Refinish a Formal Dining Room

Formal dining rooms consist of chairs and tables made from quality, expensive wood. These woods are often difficult to stain for various reasons. Dark woods such as cherry tend to dry to a too-dark color after a stain is applied. In such instances, many people opt to bypass stain and use instead a simple coat of glossy, protective varnish. Lighter woods such as oak have tight wood grains that prevent absorption. This usually causes dark stains to dry unevenly and splotchily. When refinishing your formal dining room furniture, select the right finish coat or you will end up with disappointing results.

Instructions

    1

Move the formal dining room furniture to a ventilated area, such as a patio or garage, and place it on drop cloths.

    2

Sand the formal furniture, using a palm or power sander equipped with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the wood grain. Stop when the wood finish appears dull.

    3

Exchange the 120-grit sandpaper for a finer, 220-grit. Sand the dining room furniture again, using the palm or power sander. Stop when the wood feels smooth.

    4

Wipe down the furniture with tack cloths and protect areas you do not want finished by covering them with plastic coverings and painter's tape.

    5

Open the can of stain and stir the contents, using a wooden stir stick.

    6

Fill a 1-gallon plastic painter's pot halfway the with stain.

    7

Apply a light-colored stain to light-colored wood furniture with a paintbrush made for use with oil-based paints. Brush the stain onto the wood. Brush vertically, effectively saturating the wood with stain.

    8

Wipe excess stain from the formal furniture, using cloth rags. Wait six hours for the stain to dry.

    9

Wash the paintbrush and painter's pot with mineral spirits.

    10

Open the can of varnish and stir it, using a wooden stir stick.

    11

Dip the clean paintbrush into the can of varnish; saturate only the tip of the brush.

    12

Brush the varnish onto the furniture in a vertical motion, being careful to smooth any runs. Wait six hours before using the furniture.

Furniture for Bars and Restaurants

Furniture for Bars and Restaurants

Restaurant and bar decor varies dramatically according to the style, class, ethnicity and overall atmosphere of the establishment. Different types of eateries and watering holes require different types of furnishings. However, all drinking and eating establishments need a few basic types of furniture to comfortably and adequately accommodate their patrons. Furniture for bars and restaurants is available in vast varieties of styles to complement any decor.

Portable Bars

Bars are usually built-in furnishings, but portable bars are available.
Bars are usually built-in furnishings, but portable bars are available.

Most night clubs and taverns -- and some restaurants -- have the bar built right into the establishment. However, when business calls for cocktail preparation areas that are not included in the building, portable bars are commonly used. A portable bar is typically set on wheels for easy mobility and features a counter area about 4 to 4.5 feet high. Concealed beneath the counter is a shelf area for alcohol and supplies, an ice bin and an attached well for holding liquor bottles. Portable bars come in various sizes with additional features such as stainless steel sinks with drains that can be positioned over catch bins, and additional supply racks and shelves.

Booths and Half-Booths

Half booths include a table, bench and chairs.
Half booths include a table, bench and chairs.

One of the most common furnishings in restaurants -- and oftentimes bars and taverns -- are booths. Booths are stationary seating areas that protrude from the walls. Some booths feature two bench seats facing each other across a table and are attached to the wall at the side of each bench. The other side is left open for customers to scoot into the cozy nook. Half booths consist of a long bench placed with the backside flush to the wall, a dining table in front of the bench, and chairs facing the booth on the opposite side of the table, allowing guests to enter from either side.

Dining Tables

Standard dining room tables are about 2.5 feet high.

Dining tables are a must for any restaurant that offers dining room seating. Dinning tables come in various shapes -- round, square, rectangular -- and are typically about 2.5 to 3 feet high. Hundreds of styles of indoor and outdoor industrial dining tables made of wood, plastic, metal and other materials are available to complement the decor of any style of restaurant. Accessories like tablecloths and centerpieces are commonly used as dining table enhancements in many bars and restaurant.

Chairs and Stools

Bar stools are taller to accommodate bars and pub tables.

Every bar or restaurant needs an adequate number of chairs and stools to provide proper seating at bars and tables. Shorter stools are commonly used to seat guests at low counters -- as found in diners and coffee shops. Taller stools are best suited to seat bar customers, as the top of the bar is generally about 1 to 1.5 feet taller than a standard table. Most dining room chairs stand about 1.5 feet high at the seat and can be easily slid underneath a standard height dining table.

Pub Tables

Pub tables are taller than standard dining tables.

Another common furnishing in bars, taverns and eateries is pub tables. Pub tables are tall, free-standing tables that are usually around 4 feet from the floor -- give or take a few inches. Many bars and taverns prefer pub tables in dining areas because it allows guests in the dining room to be seated at the same level as bar patrons. Other advantages of using pub tables include enhanced views of high-placed television sets and their ability to accommodate bar-height stools.

Lounge Furniture

Couches and sofas make ideal lounge furnishings.

Whether your bar or restaurant has an elegant or casual atmosphere, lounge furniture can be an attractive and comfortable enhancement to the decor. Many upscale cocktail lounges feature plush and stylish couches, easy chairs and cocktail tables that create sophisticated lounge areas. Elegant restaurants sometimes use such furnishings to create comfortable rest areas in bathroom facilities. More casual eateries -- like sports bars and neighborhood taverns -- sometimes add plain and simple couches and tables to their floor plan for a comfy "at-home" appeal.

How to Spot Red Tide

Red tide, or Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB), blooms when phytoplankton rapidly grow in the water. The phytoplankton grow and multiply until the concentration looks like a rust color floating in and on the water. Sometimes the millions of phytoplankton release toxins that are harmful to sea life and humans. Here are a few ways to spot the red tide near you.

Instructions

    1

Look for the right color. The red tide is usually a brownish color. It looks like you released a dropper full of brown food coloring in the water. It gently penetrates the whole area but doesn't completely mix together unless it is stirred.

    2

Watch for warning signs posted on or near the beach.

    3

Notice areas of warm waters that have been that way for prolonged periods of time. California's red tide occurs in the late summer to early fall months when the surface water has warmed to unusually high temperatures. The warmth creates a good environment for the phytoplankton to multiply and grow.

    4

Pay attention to brownish yellow foam floating on the surface of the ocean water. The phytoplankton reside near warm surface water. This is where sea foam is also found so it is an ideal location for the bloom.

    5

Watch for dead fish. If you see dead fish scattered throughout the beach, this can be a sign of a lot of things of which HAB may be one.

    6

Spot the tide through the symptoms of your body. Hopefully you will spot the warning signs before this, but if you were swimming and you feel tingling in your fingers or mouth, diarrhea, or have hot and cold flashes, this may be a sign that red tide toxins have entered your body. See your doctor immediately.

How to Build a Small Pub Table

How to Build a Small Pub Table

The addition of a small pub table to your recreation room will provide a place to set your drinks or maybe just sit and talk. Building this type of table using standard available pieces can be very quick and easy. A typical pub table has a round top and a pedestal support underneath.

Instructions

Build the Pedestal

    1

Cut the 8-foot post into three separate pieces. One, 36 inches long and two matching 24-inch-long pieces.

    2

Measure and mark the center of both of the 24-inch-long pieces.

    3

Lay one of the 24-inch pieces over the other 24-inch piece to create an equal cross shape. Mark a line along both pieces where they meet each other.

    4

Cut and notch the 24-inch pieces at the center so that they fit together in a cross shape. You want the two separate pieces to fit together flush and even.

    5

Mark the center point where the two 24-inch pieces cross then drill a shallow hole about 1 inch in diameter about 1/4-inch deep. A simple 1-inch diameter spade drill bit works well for this. Now drill a 3/8-inch diameter hole at the center all the way through.

    6

Measure and mark the center point on the end of the 36-inch-long piece. This is the vertical part of the table pedestal that will be attached using a 3/8-inch diameter wood lag bolt to the cross that you just put together.

    7

Drill a 1/4-inch diameter hole 3 inches deep into the end of the 36-inch-long piece. You want the hole in the vertical post smaller then the bolt threads so the bolt will have something to grab onto.

    8

Use a wrench to screw the 5 1/2-inch-long lag bolt through the cross base into the pedestal post.

Attach the Table Top

    9

Measure and mark the center of the round piece of 3/4-inch-thick plywood.

    10

Place the round piece onto the pedestal that you just finished by aligning it to the center mark.

    11

Use "L" brackets to attach the table top to the pedestal underneath the table top.

Finishing

    12

Attach the wood veneer edging to the plywood table top using a simple household clothes iron.

    13

Set the iron on the hottest temperature and hold it against the wood edge veneer until it sticks to the plywood edge.

    14

Work your way all the way around the table top with the iron and veneer edge and allow it to overlap about an inch.

    15

Using a new razor utility knife cut through the overlap section exactly where the wood veneer ends to get a smooth edge.

    16

Sand the entire table and then apply your choice of paint or stain.

Measure the playing surface of the pool table. The playing surface does not include the rails. For example, a 6-foot table has a 32-inch by 64-inch playing surface.

    2

Use the jigsaw to cut the 2-inch thick Styrofoam to fit on the playing surface of the pool table.

    3

Lay the -inch thick Styrofoam flat and place the cut-down 2-inch thick Styrofoam on top of the -inch Styrofoam and center it. Once it is centered, mark the corners with a pen or pencil so that you know where to glue the 2-inch Styrofoam.

    4

Liberally spread the liquid nail over the -inch Styrofoam within the marks you made, and place the 2-inch foam on top of the Liquid Nail to adhere the two pieces together. Let them sit until they do not easily pull apart.

    5

Flip the Styrofoam over so that the -inch Styrofoam is on top. Liberally coat the entire surface of the Styrofoam with Liquid Nail.

    6

Place the lauan Plywood on top of the Styrofoam and place clamps around the edges to hold the two pieces together. Let it sit until the Liquid Nail is fully dry.

    7

Cut the top in half width wise with the jigsaw. This will allow you to remove one half at a time making it much lighter and easier to handle.

    8

Paint or stain the lauan top to get the look you want.

How to Build RV Dinette Furniture

How to Build RV Dinette Furniture

If you're converting a large vehicle into your own homemade RV, you'll likely want dinette furniture installed in it. Or maybe you're looking to replace the furniture that's currently in your vehicle. Whatever the case, building RV dinette furniture is more than just constructing the table and chairs. You also need to make sure these furniture pieces are securely fastened down within the vehicle so it remains secure while driving.

Instructions

    1

Choose the material that the tabletop will be made of. You can go with something stylish like cherry wood and paint or varnish it. Or you can simply use plywood and cover it with cloth or nylon to make it look nicer. Glue or staple the cover to the tabletop on the underside. Most RV tables are 42 inches by 26 inches.

    2

Construct the table legs and attach them to the tabletop. To allow more leg room, an RV table usually has only two legs that are connected by a support beam in an "H" pattern and attached to the tabletop near the middle instead of at the edges. The legs then stand on planks that lie flat on the floor and are easier to affix to the floor. Use a strong wood glue to bond everything together, as nails or screws can ruin the image.

    3

Attach brackets to one edge of the table. These brackets will affix the table to one of the camper walls for more support. Use screws small enough that they won't drill all the way through the tabletop.

    4

Cut out the pieces to construct the booths that will go with the table. There are usually two 30-inch-high booths that measure 39 inches by 24 inches. The plywood frame of each is made up of a back end, an L-shaped side end, the top end, the back support, the seat and the footrest. There can be one open side end on each booth where it will connect to the RV wall.

    5

Decide if you want to assemble the pieces before or after covering them with furniture fabric for a nicer look. If you cover each piece first, wrap the fabric tightly and staple it to the wood. As with the table pieces, bonding the booth pieces with a strong epoxy cement will help them look better if you know it won't weaken and make the booths fall apart. Look for seat cushions whose fabric goes with what you decorate the frame with.

    6

Secure the table and booths inside the RV in the area you want them in. Wood screws should work fine to affix them to the wall and floor.

How to Build a Ho Train Track

How to Build a Ho Train Track

A popular hobby that dates back a century in America is model railroading. Model railroads allow you to build your own little world, which you can base on factors like a certain region of the country or historical time period. There are several different scales of model railroads available, but one of the most popular is HO. HO scale is 1/87th the size of a real railroad, and gets its name because it is half the size of O scale trains (the most famous of which were Lionel trains). HO scale trains are economical, relatively small, and have a wide variety of products available, making them ideal for beginners.

Instructions

    1

Decide where you will build your layout, and measure how much space you have and what shape the layout will be.

    2

Sketch your layout on a piece of paper. If you plan to add to your layout over time, you might want to start in a small section and build out from there.

    3

Build the platform for your layout. This can be anything from nailing a sheet of plywood to an old table, to building a platform from scratch.

    4

Lay out the track, following your plans. Once you have all the track in place, nail it to the surface with finishing nails by driving the nails through the middle of the railroad ties (one towards each end, and one in the middle). It's important to secure HO track to the platform that it will be placed on because if it's not, when the trains run over the track, they'll make it come apart, breaking the electrical circuit that runs through the track and possibly derailing the train. If you don't have enough room to keep the display up permanently, nail the track itself to the plywood, but don't nail any accessories down. This will allow you to store the track by leaning it up against the wall in your garage or basement, taking up very little space.

    5

Hook up the wiring to provide power from the power pack to the tracks and any switches and accessories that you have in your layout.

    6

Choose what scenery you will use. Your layout can simply be tracks laid on a bare, flat surface, or you could dress it up with supplies from a hobby shop, such as bushes, trees, buildings, and pre-made groundcover, which you sprinkle on to a painted surface to give the appearance of grass.

    7

Continue to add on to your layout. One of the great things about model railroading is that you can spend a lifetime expanding and upgrading your layout if you choose.

How to Waterproof a Freestyle Tide Watch

How to Waterproof a Freestyle Tide Watch

The Freestyle USA line of Tide watches has pre-programmed information on 75 to 150 beaches for planning your dives. They supply you with the time, direction and height of the tides for 15 years from the date of purchase. All Tide watches are waterproof to a depth of 300 feet. These digital diving watches run on batteries and need replacement batteries from time to time. Opening the watch back breaks the waterproof seal and requires resealing to maintain the waterproof properties.

Instructions

    1

Lay your Freestyle watch face-down on a soft towel on a table or flat surface.

    2

Place a small flat-head screwdriver between the watch back and the case. Twist the screwdriver handle to pry the back off. Remove the back by lifting it straight off the watch.

    3

Pull the gasket out of the watch case. Place the gasket in gasket lubricator if it is not broken or cracked. If the gasket is faulty, place a new gasket in gasket lubricator.

    4

Clean inside the watch back with a cotton swab dampened with watch cleaner. Clean around the watch case with watch cleaner, paying special attention to the area where the back snaps onto the case.

    5

Squeeze a fine bead of crystal glue around the glass face of the watch on the inside where it touches the case. Let the glue dry according to the package instructions.

    6

Place new or lubricated old gasket into the groove on the case where the back meets it. Apply silicone 7 watch glue on top of the gasket. Place silicone watch glue on the back around the edges.

    7

Press the back firmly onto the watch case until it snaps in place. Let the silicone dry thoroughly before using the watch under water.

How to Make Dining Table Edging

How to Make Dining Table Edging

Most dining room tables have smooth finished edges. There are many styles of edgings selected for dining rooms. Traditional styles include a simple rounded edge or an ogee contour. These edgings are created using a router table and the correct router bit for the contour or shape that you want. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Install a contour edge router bit in the router table that matches the thickness and shape of your tabletop wood. Follow the tool manufacturer's directions for installing router bits with your table type. Install your bit upside down if you intend to cut your tabletop edges after the top is built.

    2

Adjust the fence on the router table so that the blade will cut the entire shape. With some woods that are harder or more dense, you may need to make several passes to trim the wood away slowly enough to prevent the bit from burning the wood. Test your exact wood type on the router table before cutting your dining room table wood.

    3

Place your dining room table on the router table with the face side down. Turn the router on. Move the table smoothly along the fence, passing through the router action. Continue routing past the end of the wood for a smooth corner finish. Turn the wood and repeat for each side.

    4

Make several passes for harder wood types, adjusting the fence to allow the bit to remove more wood on each pass until the final contour is cut. For a hand-held router, hold the router and move it evenly along the upright tabletop. Move toward and past each corner. This will require you to start a few inches from each corner.

How to Create a French Country Dining Room

How to Create a French Country Dining Room

The decor style known as "French country" was originally known as "French Provenale" or "French Provincial," in tribute to the sunny, rustic region of Provence in southeastern France. It mixes elements from rustic farmhouses and elegant country manors to create a distinctively French atmosphere. You can create your own classic French country dining room with a little knowledge and insight of this refined, yet relaxed, home decor style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Research the aspects, color schemes and decor items used in the traditional French country design style, which is distinguished by an airy elegance that seamlessly includes elements of nature with that of a fine chateau. Staple colors include white, blue, yellow and gold, and textured fabrics typically feature floral patterns, such as the fleur-de-lis, or images of a rustic countryside, called "toile." Antiques, gilded edges, faux finishes and wood furniture with natural or aged finishes are also common in the French country style.

    2

Assess your dining area to determine how you can use existing elements to create the casual, elegant atmosphere of classic French country decor style. Determine how you can use natural light, draw attention to existing focal points in the room's architecture, and where the biggest changes will need to be made to create your French country dining room. Remove items that clash with the simple, refined look of the decor, such as stainless steel, overly bright colors, and heavy, monotone drapes or carpets.

    3

Rethink items you already have -- you'll save time spent shopping and lots of money if you put some effort into giving your dining room's existing furniture pieces, lighting fixtures and other home decor items a French-country makeover. Whitewashing bare wood furniture, reupholstering items with fabrics reminiscent of France, like toile or damask, or putting silver candlesticks, serving platters or bright French pottery on display are all affordable alternatives to refurnishing an entire dining room. You may be surprised at how easily you will find and pieces around your house that with just a little re-thinking will be a perfect addition to your French country dining room.

    4

Add furniture, lighting fixtures, decor items, paint and wallpaper where they are lacking in your French country dining room. The aim of French country design is to create a casual, comfortable setting to entertain friends and family while highlighting the formal touches that defined the French aristocracy. For lighting fixtures, crystal chandeliers and glass lanterns are more appropriate than modern electric lamps. Consider adding striped or patterned wallpaper or draperies that run from floor to ceiling play up the ceiling height and draw interest to the architecture of the room.

Pub Table Height Vs. Chair Height

Pub Table Height Vs. Chair Height

Pub tables, also called bar tables, measure around 42 inches tall. When selecting a chair to coordinate with a pub table, the seat height of the chair should measure 10 to 12 inches less than the height of the tabletop. Does this Spark an idea?

Size

A pub table may be any width or length but measures around 42 inches tall. A chair with a seat measuring between 28 and 30 inches will fit well with this size table.

Types

Pub tables come in different shapes, such as square, round or rectangular. Common materials for pub tables and chairs include wood and metal.

Considerations

Some tables have an apron, which is an overhang extending downward from the edge of the tabletop. Make sure if you select armchairs that the arms slide underneath the table.

Warning

Counter height tables and chairs measure 6 inches less than pub height tables and chairs. This difference is not easily discernible without measuring. Always measure to check what height your table or chair is, as pub and counter height tables and chairs cannot be used together.

Tip

Pub tables are also comfortable to stand at. If you or your guests will only be using a pub table for setting drinks on, you might not require the use of the chair.

Terminology for Dinnerware Place Settings

Terminology for Dinnerware Place Settings

Dinnerware is a generic term that refers to the items used for serving or consuming a meal at the dining room table, regardless of the time of day the meal is served, including dinner, lunch or breakfast. Knowing proper dinnerware terminology makes it easier to set a proper table, whether that setting is for a formal dinner party or an informal family meal. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

The primary function of dinnerware is to facilitate the serving and consumption of food. Each piece of dinnerware serves a specific function, and some items may have multiple functions, depending on the formality of the meal being served. Understanding the proper terminology for each piece of dinnerware will aid in setting the table quickly, efficiently and correctly.

Significance

A proper understanding of dinnerware terminology is a factor of good manners. It is not intended as a snooty or high-society affectation, but rather a means of making all guests comfortable. By placing the proper dinnerware items in their proper place, and calling them by their proper name, everyone at the table is provided with a clear understanding of the flow of the meal, which helps alleviate potential awkwardness and embarrassment.

Types

Dinnerware is broken down in to four broad categories. "Dishware" refers to the plates, platters, bowls and other items the food is served in or on. "Drinkware" refers to the glasses used to hold beverages, with the exception of cups in which hot drinks are served. "Flatware" refers to eating utensils. "Linens" refers to table covers and napkins.

Features

Dinnerware may be formal or informal. Formal dinnerware typically requires the use of bone china dishware, crystal drinkware, silver or gold flatware and cloth linens. Informal dinnerware may consist of a variety of materials depending on the nature of the gathering. An informal dinner party with friends may consist of stoneware dishes, all-purpose glassware, stainless steel flatware and cloth linens, while a casual family lunch may utilize paper plates, plastic cups and flatware, and paper napkins.

Considerations

Most dinnerware items are referred to by their common usage. A butter knife is typically used to spread butter. A bread plate typically holds bread. A tea cup is used for hot tea and a wine glass is used for wine. The flatware item used first is typically set on the outside of the place setting. The idea is to make serving and consuming a meal as simple and enjoyable as possible.

How Does Tide To Go Work?

How Does Tide To Go Work?

What Is Tide to Go?

Tide to Go is an instant stain remover that comes in a marker-style applicator. It helps eliminate fresh food and drink stains without having to remove the clothes you are wearing; you can apply the solution right on the clothing. It was created for those stains that occur at work or on when you are away from home. Stains that Tide to Go works well on include tomato juice, barbecue sauce, grape juice, coffee, tea, wine and even chocolate syrup. It does not work well on greasy stains, ink, blood and grass stains. It is not meant for set-in stains. However, it does remove other stains without the use of water, and fits conveniently in a pocketbook or briefcase. It is popular because of its convenience and effectiveness. It comes in a single pack, three-pick and a five-pack.

How to Use Tide to Go

Before using the Tide to Go pen, remove the residue left from the stain. Then, press the tip of the pen on the stain several times to remove the liquid solution onto the stain. Rub the tip gently across the stain to remove it. Repeat with more liquid, if necessary. It's a good idea to place a paper towel under the stained material to capture any liquid. Also, consider blotting the stain with a paper towel after you have completed the application. If the stain does not come out, you will need to pre-treat the stain before washing. Tide to Go is not meant to be used as a pretreatment product. If you are concerned about fading colors, test a small area first. Tide to Go is safe for most color-safe materials, machine washable materials, and dry cleanable fabrics.

How Tide to Go Works

Tide to Go was created specifically for fresh food and drink stains that a person encounters while "on the go." It was created after consumer research showed what type of stains are most common when a person is away from home. Because Tide to Go is used on fresh stains and color-safe garments, the ingredients are peroxide (non-chlorine bleach), surfactant and perfume. Non-chlorine bleaches are materials that release oxygen, which cleans and bleaches stains. Peroxide is liquid non-chlorine bleach and is non-toxic. Surfactants are wetting agents that help ingredients spread easily. The result of these ingredients is a convenient laundry agent that works wherever you are.

Can You Seat More People at Round or Long Tables?

Can You Seat More People at Round or Long Tables?

If you don't remember your high school geometry, now is the time to review to determine which seat more people, round or long tables. The basic measurements for your computation are for your place settings. You should allow per setting either 24 inches --- doable but a little crowded, or 30 inches --- comfortably welcoming. Also, consider space in the middle of the table for serving dishes and room between the walls and the seats (18 inches) for guests to move around. Does this Spark an idea?

How to Calculate for Settings

When performing your calculations, remember that the formula to determine the circumference of a circle is C = d x (pi, 3.14159) times the diameter. To calculate the number of settings for long tables, multiply the length of the table times two, divide the total by 30 inches and add two settings for the ends.

The Number of Settings for Round Tables

Using the above formula for finding the circumference of a circle, you can determine that a round table with a diameter of 48 inches can comfortably seat four or five people; a 54-inch table, six people; a 60-inch table, six people; and a 72-inch table, eight people. You wouldn't want a round table any larger than 6 feet because it would be too big for conversations to occur and there would be all that dead space in the middle.

Calculate the Settings for Long Tables

Two times the lengh of the table divided by 30 inches plus one setting at each end.
Two times the lengh of the table divided by 30 inches plus one setting at each end.

When you use the formula for the number of settings per long table, you come up with the following results: A 40 x 72-inch table comfortably seats six guests; a 44 x 84-inch table, eight guests; a 48 x 96-inch table, either eight or ten guests if you squeeze in two at each end. Given the average size of dining rooms in today's homes, any table bigger than this would make getting into their seats impossible for guests.

Advantages of a Round Table

Besides your personal taste and feeling that a round table is more inviting and more conducive to socializing, there are practical matters. For one thing, round tables are space savers. For another, you don't feel so cheek-to-jowl with your fellow diners, and maneuvering in and out of your seat is easier.

The Advantages of the Long Table

Think in terms of your place settings.
Think in terms of your place settings.

On the other hand, a long table seems more formal but can be informal if you're serving family style. If you opt for a long table, make certain that the width is in proportion with the length and can accommodate serving dishes and centerpieces. In social terms, people find conversing with the people on either side of them and across from the table more comfortable.

How to Make a Bar Table

How to Make a Bar Table

If you have a small kitchen, instead of adding a big dining table, you can build a bar table which can double as an eating table. A bar table can also be placed in a corner of a family room for entertaining guests. With a little bit of elbow grease, a few household tools and a few lumber pieces you can complete this project in less than a week for those with basic carpentry skills, or a minimum of a couple of days for those with advanced carpentry skills. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Find the location in your home where you will place your bar table. Take into consideration the shape of the room and the bar placement, whether it will be placed in a corner or placed up against the wall. Also, take into consideration the number of bar stools you want to add and the space for people sitting and standing around it.

    2

Measure the area of the location you picked. From this you will base how big of a bar you will build. You want it to be as proportionate to the size of the room. For an average size room, you can build a 6-foot-long bar table; for a smaller room build a bar that is 4 feet long; for a larger room you can build an 8-foot-long bar table.

    3
    Table Bar Design

Draw a design of the bar you plan to build, or download available bar plans from the Internet. One site that specializes in bar designs is www.precision-images.com where you pay a small fee for a complete diagram with instructions on how to put a bar table together. If you want a simple design with a bar top and four legs, you can sketch a drawing similar to the photo or image on this step. This simple design shows an overall height of 4.25 feet, with bar counter length of 5 feet and counter depth of 2 feet. The four legs are each 4 feet high.

    4

    Gather all materials needed.

    5

Use a circular saw to cut the 4" x 4" lumber. Cut 4 pieces with each measuring at 4 feet in length.

    6

Cut the plywood to measure 5 feet in length and 2 feet in width.

    7

Lay the plywood flat on the floor, with the underside facing up. Attach the lumber connectors or 4" x 4" post anchor to the underside of the plywood. Place them approximately 3 inches away from each corner of the plywood. Make sure that the screws are tight.

    8

Connect the legs by screwing them onto the post or lumber connectors. Drill holes for the screws to penetrate the wood better, then use a screw driver to screw a 2-inch screw to hold each side.

    9

Flip the table up, then check to see if it is level by placing a level on top of the table on both directions. Make adjustments if it is wobbly or uneven.

    10

Place foot protectors or pads on each foot of the 4" x 4" post. This will protect your floor from any scratches or damage.

    11

Apply your tiles on top of the counter. You can choose 2" x 2" glass or ceramic tiles, or you may opt for an easier application of using mosaic tiles made from broken or remnant pieces of tiles. Apply the mortar evenly with a trowel and float, then lay down each tile carefully. For square tiles, lay them down starting from center then spreading on each side and adding spacers for even distribution. Make the necessary cut at the edge. Use tile caps to cap the edges. For mosaic, you can apply this as you wish randomly, and you can also use tile caps to cap the edge or molding to frame it.

    12

Let the tiles dry overnight, then apply grout using a float. Use a wet sponge to immediately wipe off the excess grout for easy clean-up. Then allow to dry again overnight.

    13

Apply a wood stain or paint on the legs or wood molding if any was used to cap the edges of the tiles. Let dry.

    14

Do a final tile clean-up, making sure no residue from grout or mortar are left on the tiles. Ensure that the top is smooth and shiny. Once it is clean you can now enjoy your bar. Serve refreshments, drinks, beers, snacks or eat your favorite meal on your new bar table.

Importance of Tides

Importance of Tides

Tides are caused by the magnetic pull of the moon and sun on the planet, and they occur in regular cycles that can be predicted. Individuals who live and work on the seas and oceans study the tides and learn to predict their movements and effects.

Fishing

Fish may concentrate during ebb tides. Commercial fishermen follow the tides and learn to fish during levels of highest concentration to improve their economic investment and to make more efficient use of their time. Recreational fishermen may also fish during ebb tides because the concentrations of smaller fish attract the larger trophy fish.

Tides affect other aspects of oceanic life, including the reproductive activities of fish and ocean plants. Floating plants and animals ride the tidal currents between the breeding areas and deeper waters. The tides help remove pollutants and circulate nutrients ocean plants and animals need to survive.

Tidal Zone Foods

Crabs, mussels, snails, seaweed and other edible sea life inhabit the tidal zone. Small tide pools may also contain small fish and sea vegetables. The sea life found in these regions are often harvested for food. Without the regular washing of the tides, these complex and abundant creatures would die and food resources would diminish.

Navigation

Tides affect the depth and currents in and around coastal areas. Ships may need to navigate the waters during high tide in some areas or risk running aground. Pilots take into consideration the water level, width of channels and direction of the water flow to determine the best time to travel. Pilots may choose to travel when tides are at ebb in order to get tall loads under bridges.

Tidal flows can also help or impede the progress of a ship in the water. Pilots can take advantage of the current to get the craft where it needs to go. A thorough understanding of how tides affect navigation and how to use the tides in navigation can improve the productivity of marine and inland shipping.

Weather

Tides and tidal currents affect the weather by stirring the ocean waters. The tides and tidal currents mix arctic water that can't absorb lots of sunlight with warmer topic water that does. The stirring produces more predictable and habitable climate conditions and balances temperatures on the planet.

Tidal Energy

Two high tides and two low tides occur during every 24-hour period. The predictability of the tides, fast movement of water during the inflow and outflow can provide a source of renewable energy to communities living along the coast. Hydroelectric plants can exploit the water flow in ways similar to those used on rivers.

Small Corner Kitchen Table Ideas

Creative use of space becomes a challenge when working in a small area. Kitchens today are used as more than food preparation and eating rooms. Watching television, working on a laptop computer, writing and children doing homework have invaded the kitchen space, and the tables available for small corners accommodate these traditional and extended uses. Does this Spark an idea?

Wall-Mounted

A wall-mounted table that folds away is perfect for those who use a kitchen table occasionally. Put two or four decoratively cushioned stools against the walls in the corner, and when it's time for the table, pull it down and place the stools around it. Wall-mounted tables come in several shapes, with rectangular being the most common.

High Top

The high-top or pub table is an ideal choice for small kitchen corners. Tuck two sides of a square high-top table against the corner walls and store the stools underneath. High tops are available in a wide variety of fabrications, including laminated woods and granite. Be aware that the heavier the materials used, the more difficult it will be to move the table away from the walls. Select a table that coordinates with your kitchen cabinetry and countertops.

Bistro Table

A small, circular bistro table fits neatly into a kitchen corner. Two chairs are customarily placed around the table, and they can be decoratively cushioned to match your decor. Another plus of a bistro table is that it is usually made of metal and can be easily spray-painted in a color of your choice.

Drop Leaf Table

Drop leaf tables come in all sizes and shapes to fit any kitchen corner. Consider a narrow, rectangular table with either one or two dropped leaves for your kitchen area. A gateleg table is a type of drop leaf that folds away. When not in use, the table is pushed against one of the corner walls and minimally protrudes into the kitchen. Open up one or both leaves for expanded use. A square drop leaf with shelves underneath provides additional storage in a small kitchen.

Triangular Table

A small, triangular table nestled into a corner allows one chair or a stool hidden underneath. For additional seating, pull the table away from the corner and add two more chairs.

For an exotic and richly-colored centerpiece, fill a crystal bowl with red pomegranates, orange persimmons, green artichokes, yellow gourds and a few white mini pumpkins. The fall bounty display will give the table a fresh appeal.

Painted Dining Room Furniture Ideas

Painted Dining Room Furniture Ideas

A dining room table or chair is a good candidate for refurbishing as long as it is sturdy and the surface is not too badly damaged. Paint is the least expensive and easiest way to refresh old furniture. Painting enables you to choose colors which coordinate with your wall color and upholstered pieces. Consider painting a table and chairs in different colors or using one technique on chairs and another on the table for a more eclectic look. Does this Spark an idea?

Enamel

Enamel paint if often used to paint kitchen and bathroom cabinets. It is well-suited for furniture because it is a tough, durable surface which holds up well to the wear and tear dining room furniture receives. Choose high-quality water-based enamel for ease of application and cleanup. Semi-gloss or satin finishes work well for furniture and dont have the shiny look which highlights imperfections. Apply the first coat, let dry overnight and sand. Remove sanding residue and apply a second coat. Two coats should sufficiently cover the old surface and provide a smooth, hard finish. On table tops, paint with the wood grain in long, even strokes.

Antique glaze

Antiquing glaze adds an old-world touch to painted furniture. Paint furniture pieces with two coats of water-based enamel in the color or colors of your choice. Let dry overnight. Mix one part brown paint with three parts glaze, which can be purchased at a paint or hardware store. Brush on a generous amount of glaze mixture, and then wipe it off with cheesecloth or a rag. Wipe in long, even strokes in the same direction. Ensure glaze settles into cracks, crevices and decorative details. Keep applying glaze and wiping it off until you are satisfied with the finish. Work in small sections on larger pieces to keep the glaze from drying out. When glaze has dried thoroughly, protect with one or two coats of satin water-based varnish.

White wash

A simulated lime wash or pickled finish hides many flaws and gives even the most disreputable pieces a fresh, contemporary look. Wipe all pieces with liquid sander to remove dirt and to rough up the surface. If wood is extremely dark, consider stripping it or sanding it with sandpaper to remove the darkest layer of the finish. Clean sand or strip residue and let the pieces dry thoroughly. Mix creamy-white latex enamel in a satin finish with water until it has the consistency of cream. Paint furniture with this mixture. Thin with water if you like a sheer look; add more paint if you want less opaqueness. The idea is to see the wood through the white paint, which takes the place of the original lime wash. Wipe up drips and runs as you go. For a tropical look, use this technique on table and chairs. For a more sophisticated, contemporary look, paint your table in black enamel and whitewash the chairs.
