Dinnerware is a generic term that refers to the items used for serving or consuming a meal at the dining room table, regardless of the time of day the meal is served, including dinner, lunch or breakfast. Knowing proper dinnerware terminology makes it easier to set a proper table, whether that setting is for a formal dinner party or an informal family meal. Does this Spark an idea?

Function

    The primary function of dinnerware is to facilitate the serving and consumption of food. Each piece of dinnerware serves a specific function, and some items may have multiple functions, depending on the formality of the meal being served. Understanding the proper terminology for each piece of dinnerware will aid in setting the table quickly, efficiently and correctly.

Significance

    A proper understanding of dinnerware terminology is a factor of good manners. It is not intended as a snooty or high-society affectation, but rather a means of making all guests comfortable. By placing the proper dinnerware items in their proper place, and calling them by their proper name, everyone at the table is provided with a clear understanding of the flow of the meal, which helps alleviate potential awkwardness and embarrassment.

Types

    Dinnerware is broken down in to four broad categories. "Dishware" refers to the plates, platters, bowls and other items the food is served in or on. "Drinkware" refers to the glasses used to hold beverages, with the exception of cups in which hot drinks are served. "Flatware" refers to eating utensils. "Linens" refers to table covers and napkins.

Features

    Dinnerware may be formal or informal. Formal dinnerware typically requires the use of bone china dishware, crystal drinkware, silver or gold flatware and cloth linens. Informal dinnerware may consist of a variety of materials depending on the nature of the gathering. An informal dinner party with friends may consist of stoneware dishes, all-purpose glassware, stainless steel flatware and cloth linens, while a casual family lunch may utilize paper plates, plastic cups and flatware, and paper napkins.

Considerations

    Most dinnerware items are referred to by their common usage. A butter knife is typically used to spread butter. A bread plate typically holds bread. A tea cup is used for hot tea and a wine glass is used for wine. The flatware item used first is typically set on the outside of the place setting. The idea is to make serving and consuming a meal as simple and enjoyable as possible.
