How to Repaint Bedside Tables

Bedside tables are a staple in bedroom dcor. Whether you prefer a plain, uncluttered pair of bedside tables, or want to use them for holding books, alarm clocks, telephones and table lamps, bedside tables add a finishing touch to any bedroom. You need not purchase a new pair of tables to redecorate; you can paint an old pair to coordinate better with the design theme of the room, or if you want to make a dramatic change. Remove any hardware like handles or knobs from the tables.

Lay a painter's tarp or drop cloth underneath one of the bedside tables. This protects the floor underneath by absorbing any paint spills.

Smooth down any rough or chipped edges with 180-grit sandpaper.

Clean the table to prepare it for priming. A basic cleaning spray, like window cleaner, can remove any dirt and debris from the table and create the right conditions for painting. Allow to dry before priming.

Pour some primer into a paint tray, until the tray is about halfway full. Most bedside tables are small in size and should only require less than 1/3 of a gallon each of primer and paint. Primer prepares the surface of the table for painting and ensures a smooth, even finish.

Use a small paintbrush to reach into any tight spaces that the larger brush did not (for example, into intricate carving, or into corners).

Dip a paintbrush into the primer and brush the primer across the top and all sides of the table.

Wait for the primer to dry completely before painting. This can take anywhere from a half hour to half a day; refer to the directions on the can of primer to be sure, as this can vary from one brand of primer to the next.

Rinse the paint tray and fill it halfway with the desired paint color.

Dip the paintbrush into the paint and brush the paint across the top and all sides of the table.

Wait for the paint to dry completely before following up with a second coat. This ensures proper coverage and creates an even, finished look. This can take anywhere from a half hour to half a day; refer to the directions on the can of paint to be sure.

Repeat this process on the other bedside table or tables.
