How to Train Kittens to Stay Off Kitchen Counters

Kittens are naturally curious animals. Not only do they naturally prefer to be in higher places, they will go on counters just because it's there and they think they might find food. However, as petplace.com reminds us, a kitten on the counter isn't safe for her, nor is it safe for you. The food they find can make them sick and the trace amounts of fecal matter they can leave from their paws isn't safe for you.

Instructions

    1

Make sure your kitten has other places to climb. Pet supply stores carry climbing trees for cats. They come in various sizes and shapes, so you will be able to find something that fits into your home easily. Place it near a window with a view. This is more likely to keep your kitten's attention.

    2

Clean up any food you leave on the counter. Kittens are more likely to try to jump on counters if they think they will find food. Remnants of raw meat can carry bacteria, which can make your kitten sick.

    3

Use the click-and-treat method. Teach your kitten to jump to "click" a wand (try a cat toy on a stick) that you hold. When she touches the stick, give her a cat treat. Add the word "off" as she jumps down. Eventually, she will learn that "off" is the cue, so you will not always need the wand.

    4

Spray your cat with water. You can pick up a spray bottle at any dollar store. One or two squirts directly to the face will do the trick when she is on the counter. Try to hide the bottle. Kittens want to please their owners, so they are more likely to listen if they think you are displeased and aren't associating the actual bottle with the act of being squirted in the face.

    5

Clean your counter tops with bleach. Kittens are sensitive to smell and will generally avoid odors they do not like. Using a strong cleaner will deter them from jumping.
