How to Turn a Kitchen Table Into an Island

Whether you have a beautifully carved antique wooden table or a sleek ultramodern piece, your kitchen table can establish new territory in the kitchen as its own island. An addition of an island can give loads of valuable surface area to accommodate all of your latest appliance acquisitions. You may even discover that your additional space can turn your kitchen into the latest food production scene. Converting the kitchen table into center stage presents your kitchen with a special quality, that style that is yours alone. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Move the kitchen table to the desired position in the kitchen. Secure the table at its new position by nailing or gluing it to the floor. You can choose to keep the table as is, or add new features.

    2

Add a shelf or rack to the lower portion of the table. Measure the length and width of the area, and obtain an appropriately designed shelf, or a stainless steel wire rack. Attach the shelf or rack with appropriate brackets or braces, and voila, you have double the surface area.

    3

Add an electrical outlet. An additional electrical outlet can give extra versatility to the new island. This one useful step can ensure that you and your helpers will not just have a table, but a whole new workstation in the kitchen. This extra outlet can afford you with the ability to go into small production for your baking or cuisine specialties.

    4

Add height to the table. This can be accomplished in many ways depending on the style of the table. An additional chunk of wood could be added to the tabletop. A thick butcher-block top can be both functional and attractive and works well with most table styles. Alternatively, add thick wood and then tile the tabletop for an easy clean-up surface.

    5

Add wood paneling onto the sides of the table to give it an enclosed look. Paint or stain the paneling to match the surrounding dcor. This will give the feeling that it's been there all along.
